Iowa has 99 Counties and 99 County Courthouses but you can't file bankruptcy in any of them. That is because all Bankruptcy cases are filed in Federal Court.
In Iowa, we have two Federal Judicial Districts, the Northern and the Southern. Both districts have jurisdiction over the entire state of Iowa. It is common for clients who live in the Southern District to file in the North, perhaps they work in the North and it is easier to get to the hearing during the day or maybe they know a trusted attorney up there.
It is also common for people in the Northern district to file in Des Moines. Many of my clients travel from all over Iowa, in part because there just are not a lot of bankruptcy attorneys in our many smaller Iowa cities and towns.
